Watch Career-Spanning Trailer for Bob Weir Doc ‘The Other One’
LSD, sexual exploits, family stability and psychedelic guitar telepathy: It’s all there in Netflix’s trailer for the upcoming documentary The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir, which surveys the life and career of the legendary Grateful Dead guitarist.
“I’ve led a kind of unusual life,” Weir says in the above clip. “I was a 16-year-old kid when I started playing with the Grateful Dead. The music was an adventure…Our fans were a little bit different. We’ve got kind of a little gypsy entourage. You just had to see it.”
The Mike Fleiss-directed documentary – which hits Netflix on Friday, May 22nd – traces Weir’s childhood in Palo Alto, California through his work with the Dead and beyond, paying extra attention to his creative partnership with bandmate Jerry Garcia. In the trailer, Weir summarizes their deep connection on the electric guitar: ”I could intuit and be there when he got there with a little surprise for him,” he says.
The Other One features interviews with Weir’s Grateful Dead bandmates, other musical collaborators and family members. ”If you don’t have an ego, you can be the best Number Two on the planet,” Sammy Hagar says. “That’s kind of what Bob became. It makes him special.”
The documentary also includes a plethora of archival and performance footage. ”We certainly unearthed a lot of buried treasure from the Grateful Dead archive while making this film,” Fleiss said in a statement.
