The Next Big Thing

Funny-woman Kristen Wiig has made a career out of playing the oddball. Her latest role, a failed playwright in Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini‘s Girl Most Likely, is no exception to that rule.

When Wiig appeared on the red carpet before the Cinema Society- and Brooks Brothers-hosted screening of the film last night, she explained, “I really just gravitate towards roles that have interesting, weird people, and I don’t know why.” Maybe because “you don’t see roles like this very often.” Her character, Imogene, is loosely based on the writer Michelle Morgan’s real-life experiences. “There was probably more crying than what you see in the movie, but the scene where she gets in a car accident with the Porsche Boxster and the scene where the former go-go dancer mom [played by Annette Bening in the film] gets spanked by her boyfriend, those both actually happened.”

Though Bening wasn’t around to talk about the film’s cringe-worthy moments (of which there are many), Wiig offered up her own personal pet peeve about family time at home in Kansas. “Talking about the next meal when you are eating right now,” she said. “Like, during breakfast, talking about what you are eating for lunch.”
