The name of the game at this weekend’s Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic was cross-cultural pollination. All-American heartthrob Matthew McConaughey, the day’s cohost, wore a white linen suit by the Englishman Neil Barrett. Then there was the Liberty State Park location. “It’s a bit peculiar, a polo match with the Manhattan skyline to the left and the Statue of Liberty to the right,” said British designer Henry Holland, in town from London. “I was wondering if I should have brought my foam finger as well!”

Polo is the sport of kings, but it was literary royalty who tossed the first ball of the game. While stomping in divots in the field at halftime, Dree Hemingway (great-granddaughter of Ernest, of course) told, “It’s a huge honor to be picked, which made me all the more nervous. This event is the first big moment of the summer.” Big moment or not, fashion’s favorite player, Nacho Figueras, had to watch from the sidelines. The athlete is still recovering from a broken pelvis. Instead, his 11-year-old son, Hilario, donned his father’s jersey and scored no less than three points, securing a win for the Black Watch team this year.
