On the Charts: ‘Pitch Perfect 2′ Hits All the Right Notes
2015 continues to be the Year of the Soundtrack on the Billboard 200 as Pitch Perfect 2 became the third soundtrack to reach Number One after debuting atop the charts with 107,000 total album sales. While the sequel already made more at the box office in its first week than the original made in its entire theatrical run – $70 million opening compared to $65 million total in 2012 – the Pitch Perfect 2 soundtrack has already improved on the first movie’s “Cups”-fueled Number Three peak on the Billboard 200, Billboard reports.
Pitch Perfect 2 joins Furious 7 and Empire as sountracks that have topped the charts in 2015, and Fifty Shades of Grey nearly joined them by peaking at Number Two. All three of those film soundtracks currently reside in the Top Five, with Fifty Shades at Number Three and Furious 7 at Number Five.
The a cappella-packed soundtrack was also aided by a week that didn’t feature any other big ticket new releases; Incubus’ Trust Fall (Side A) EP was the only other new entry in the Top 10, selling 40,000 copies to land at Number Six. The week’s Number Four Album, David Guetta’s Listen, jumped from Number 30 in its 24th week on the chart to Number Three thanks to a 99-cent download deal from the Google Play store. Mumford & Sons’ Wilder Mind, last week’s Number One, dropped down one spot to Number Two while selling another 58,000 units.
Next week, we’ll find out if the Barden Bellas can hold off new releases from Brandon Flowers, Zedd and Faith No More’s long-awaited reunion album.
