Luke Bryan on ‘Kill the Lights,’ Country’s Sexiest Men
Luke Bryan is in the middle of one of his biggest years. In March, he wrapped up his wildly popular Spring Break EP collection and is pregaming for the August release of his fifth studio album Kill the Lights with his Kick the Dust Up tour.
“With Kill the Lights, my approach has been the same,” he tells Rolling Stone Country. “The subject matters will obviously grow beyond Spring Break subject matters, but for the most part, I’m still going to have fun with my music and always try to write that song that makes everybody dance and have a good time.”
At FarmBorough, Bryan brought his boozy, fun-loving songs to life. He kicks off the show with Kill the Lights‘ first single and the song the tour is named for, “Kick the Dust Up.” “[That song] isn’t indicative of everything on the album,” he says. “The main thing is ‘Kick the Dust Up’ gets it goin’, gets it rockin’. It’s a big, fun, summer, outdoorsy anthem.”
A few weeks ago, Bryan offered us a few more details on the album, promising a collection of songs that were “country-er than Crash My Party.” Though he didn’t have his “Drink a Beer” co-writer Chris Stapleton around to help him pen a few tracks, Bryan believes that there are songs on the new album as emotionally resonant as that one. “I’ve got some stuff that is as deep as ‘Drink a Beer,’ love songs, sad songs,” he says backstage at FarmBorough.
With the massive heights his career has reached, Bryan understandably has very few holes to fill in his résumé. “I would say that if I had the opportunity to do a Super Bowl halftime show, that would be crazy,” he says. “Other than that I think what is at the top of my bucket list is just enjoyment of this career.”
Both on and offstage, Bryan appears to be enjoying every moment of his career to the fullest, even commenting on who is more deserving of the “Country’s Sexiest Man Alive” title, which People magazine bestowed upon him last year. “I was on the boat with Dierks [Bentley], and he’s pretty hot,” he jokes. “He’s working out a lot more than me.”
As for his secret to receiving such a title? “I’ve never been a gym rat; I just get up there and do what I do,” he says. “It’s flattering to have that happen. Now where’s my worldwide title? I’m coming for you Brad Pitt [and] Ryan Reynolds! I’m comin’ after you!”
