Hear Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Groove-Inflected ‘We Turn Red’
Red Hot Chili Peppers have unveiled new song “We Turn Red,” the third single they’ve debuted from their 11th studio album, The Getaway. The album is out June 17th.
Leading off with a loping beat and grooving melody, the song’s soundscape buoys Anthony Kiedis’ laidback flow as he sings “we turn red” and “it’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.” He alternates between croons and strutty inflections as the song progresses between funky and contemplative passages while he sings about “the orders we obey” and shares that the events that ensue are “serving up the stories of my mind.” The lyrics traverse several locales including New Orleans, Delaware, Mexico and Chicago.
Kiedis recently described their new material as being “as good as any songs we’ve ever written” in an interview with Rolling Stone.
The song follows the previous releases of The Getaway‘s singles “Dark Necessities” and the title track. Leading up to the album’s release, the group is slated to join James Corden on The Late Late Show for “Carpool Karaoke” on June 13th. Last month, the band had to cancel a performance at KROQ’s Weenie Roast – and postpone a California gig – as Kiedis was hospitalized with intestinal flu, but by month’s end he was “on the mend.”
