Hear Mickey Hart’s Placid ‘Sea of Showers’ From ‘Planet Drum’ Reissue

Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart will reissue his 1991 world music album Planet Drum this December with three new tracks that continue the LP's exploration into different drumming styles from around the world.

For the 25th anniversary edition of Planet Drum, due out December 2nd, Hart reunited with world-renowned percussionists like Zakir Hussain, Flora Purim and Babatunde Olatunji for "Sea of Showers," one of three new songs on the Planet Drum reissue along with "Throat Games" and "The Spot."

"Sea of Showers is seen as the dark patch on the near side of moon, which faces Earth and makes up the right eye of the 'Man in the Moon,'" Hart said of the inspiration behind the track in a statement. "The 'Higher frequencies' that stimulates neural activity and makes you feel tingly, very serene and focused. Chimes have a very emotional sound, it somehow reminds me of the wind, it becomes a meditation."

On Planet Drum, Hart collaborated with percussionists from Brazil, Nigeria, India and Puerto Rico to fulfill his dream of bringing "together great drummers from around the world to make a recording based entirely on percussion."

Speaking about Planet Drum, Hart said, "This experience was about people wanting to come together – folks weren't culturally bound by their rhythms; they were in the right place at the right time for a new gumbo, a new way of coming together, egoless, in the spirit, to have fun and record a classic 20th century gamelan, which has always been the carrot for me. I always wanted to ring that bell."

The 25th anniversary reissue of Planet Drum, which won Best World Music Album at the 1991 Grammys, will be released on vinyl, CD and digitally through the drummer's new deal with Universal Music Group, a partnership that will result in a new studio album in 2017 as well as reissues from Hart's solo catalog.
