Hear Joey Bada$$, Schoolboy Q’s Menacing New Song ‘Rockabye Baby’
Joey Bada$$ and Schoolboy Q unleash a pair of dark verses on their new collaboration, “Rockabye Baby.” The track will appear on Joey’s upcoming album, All-Amerikkkan Bada$$, out April 7th.
The 1-900 and Chuck Strangers-co-produced cut boasts dusty boom-bap percussion overlaid with an ominous piano loop. Joey Bada$$ goes off first, comparing himself to Muhammad Ali in his prime and calling for peace among rival gangs one moment then revolution the next: “Time is running up, feel the burn in my gut,” he spits. “And if you got the guts, scream, ‘Fuck Donald Trump.’”
Schoolboy Q follows with a slow-burning verse that begins with the Top Dawg-affiliated rapper rhyming over an acoustic guitar melody and builds to a righteous, rhyme-packed pitch. “From gettin’ lynched in fields into owning buildings,” he raps. “Getting millions, influencing white children/ And oddly we still ain’t even/ Still a small percentage of blacks that’s eating.”
“Rockabye Baby” follows Joey Bada$$’s politically charged video for “Land of the Free” and his previously released album track, “Devastated.” Along with Schoolboy Q, All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ will feature guest appearances from J. Cole, Styles P, Flatbush Zombies’ Meechy Darko and Joey’s Pro Era associates Kirk Knight and Nyck Caution.
All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ follows Joey’s 2015 debut LP, 2015 LP B4.DA.$$. In a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, the Brooklyn rapper spoke about how he still considers himself an independent artist despite his increasing success. “It’s funny, because I don’t consider myself a mainstream rapper, either,” he said. “They need to make a new term for me. I’m like a major-indie. Yeah, that’s what I am. I’m not underground, I’m not major label, I’m just major-indie … Dude, these major-indies are here, man. That’s what it is. We’re ‘mindies.’”
