Hear Big Boi, Phantogram Team Up for Spacey ‘Fell in the Sun’
Outkast‘s Big Boi raps about how he’s extraterrestrial and extraordinary over big, spacey, cinematic synth soundscapes on “Fell in the Sun,” the first track to come off Big Grams, the self-titled debut EP by his upcoming collaboration with indie-pop duo Phantogram. The tune features upbeat horns, fuzzy keyboard, clattering drums and a dancey rap break by the latter group’s Sarah Barthel, who shouts out Atlanta and New York – where Big Boi and Phantogram come from respectively. The seven-track record, which boasts appearances by Run the Jewels and Skrillex, is set to come out on September 25th.
The artists originally decided to collaborate after Big Boi reached out to the duo when he was impressed by Phantogram’s “Mouthful of Diamonds,” which he’d Shazamed from an ad. They collaborated on three songs for Big Boi’s Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors solo album. The EP came together after that. With the release of Big Grams, the group is planning surprise live performances and special fan events.
Phantogram, which is rounded out by Josh Carter, have released two albums and a few EPs, while Big Boi has been busy as of late, issuing his recent Vicious Lies EP and finishing a tour with Andre 3000 as Outkast. The rapper has also added a verse to a remix of Maroon 5′s “Animals” and contributed a tune to a Game of Thrones mixtape. Big Boi and Phantogram last collaborated on “Objectum Shalamar,” a disco remix of the song “Objectum Sexuality,” which appeared on Vicious Lies.
