Albert Hammond, Jr. Channels Television for ‘Born Slippy’
While the Strokes are revving up activity, guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr. is getting ready to release his new album Momentary Masters. Hammond, Jr.’s third solo LP and first since 2008′s ¿Cómo Te Llama? is due out July 31st, and on Tuesday, he shared the album’s first single “Born Slippy,” which, despite the well-known title, is not a cover of the classic Underworld track.
Although Strokes singer Julian Casablancas’ zany solo albums are known for deviating away from the band’s classic sound, Hammond, Jr. fully embraces his influences on his solo ventures. On “Born Slippy,” the bouncy interplay of the guitars and Hammond, Jr.’s passionate singing recall Television’s work on Marquee Moon.
Gus Oberg, who also worked on the Strokes’ Angles and Comedown Machine, also produced Momentary Masters. “If I wasn’t getting it right [Oberg would] make me do it over and over and over again,” Hammond, Jr. told Vagrant, who will release his new album. “He was really hard on me — harder than he’s ever been. It was fun though; I’m not complaining. If anything, it’s nice to have someone who pushes you and I could tell how excited he was about it.”
While Hammond, Jr. played the majority of instruments on his 2013 AHJ EP, his Momentary Masters band includes guitarists Hammarsing Kharhmar and Mikey Hart, bassist Jordan Brooks and drummer Jeremy Gustin. The 10-song Momentary Masters is available to pre-order now on iTunes, with purchasers receiving an instant download of “Born Slippy.”
On May 8th, the Strokes performed their first gig together in nearly a year when they headlined Atlanta’s Shaky Knees festival. The performance featured the live debut of Comedown Machine‘s “All the Time,” the first airing of Room on Fire‘s “You Talk Way Too Much” in over a decade and a guest appearance by Mac DeMarco. In April, Casablancas hinted that the band was at work on the follow-up to 2013′s Comedown Machine.
